Allan Myers has played a leading role in the modernization and expansion of the Port of Virginia. In 2017, the Virginia Port Authority (VPA) selected Allan Myers as the general contractor for the stack construction portion of the South Norfolk International Terminal (South NIT) Optimization Project, a transformative effort designed to increase cargo capacity, improve efficiency, and enhance safety at one of the East Coast’s busiest ports.

This project reconfigured the container storage area into 30 container stacks served by 60 new rail-mounted semi-automated gantry cranes and two new ship-to-shore cranes. Over the course of two and a half years, Allan Myers completed extensive excavation, milling, paving, striping, electrical work, and underground utility installation, while also constructing concrete retaining walls and the steel and concrete infrastructure required to support terminal operations. Each stack was designed to accommodate rail-mounted gantry cranes serving both the water and land sides of the facility.

The completed improvements significantly increased cargo density and expanded annual container capacity by approximately 400,000 containers. The project also improved cargo-handling efficiency, enhanced truck access throughout the terminal, and created a safer operating environment within the container yard.

The success of South NIT established the foundation for Allan Myers’ continued partnership with the VPA, including the ongoing North Norfolk International Terminal (NNIT) Optimization Project.
